Should I Hire a Pro to Change My Kitchen Cabinets’ Color?

Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are moving into a flat where we can make any changes we want, like painting walls and redoing the kitchen. We're aiming for a mid-century modern vibe, but the kitchen cabinets are a bit too light for our taste. I'm wondering if I should attempt to change the color myself or hire a professional. How difficult is it to do this on my own? And what would it typically cost to hire someone in London for such a task? It's just a color change, no new doors needed. Thanks for your help!

Consider vinyl wrapping! It's becoming popular in the UK, and could be a great alternative to painting. I’m thinking of using it in my kitchen and it’s about $350 for supplies. It's a no-mess solution and might save you hassle!

I think vinyl wrapping sounds like a solid plan. I’m already set on wrapping my countertop!

Good points! Just remember, with detailed work like refinishing cabinets, you usually get what you pay for. Also, do you really want to invest a lot into a place that's not yours?

Actually, my aunt owns the flat, and if everything works out, we'll be the owners soon. So I'm good on that front!

Just a heads up: hiring someone can get pricey, and painting cabinets requires skill for a good finish. You might not get your money back if it’s a rental. Try painting one door first! There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help with prep and technique.

The type of cabinets matters! If they're stained, changing their color can be tough, while painting over painted cabinets is relatively easy. If you're comfortable with some DIY, you might get good results with practice, but you won’t match the finish a pro gets using an HVLP sprayer in a shop. It’s about the technique and prep work!

Yeah, I hear you. The main worry for me is space since we can't really do it safely without a garden or garage.
