Should I Move My Downspout to the Other Side of the House?

I recently had gutters installed on my flat roof, but the downspout is currently on the left side of my house, running through my garden and emptying onto the front lawn. I'm thinking about having the contractors move the downspout to the right side instead, where it would end in some bushes, keeping it out of the way. However, I'm concerned about the original downspout hole—if they patch it, will it hold up? The contractor mentioned that a patch might not be reliable. I'm just worried that keeping the downspout where it is will create icy or muddy conditions on the lawn during winter, and I'd prefer to avoid that. Any advice on this situation?

Definitely a smart move to reposition the downspout! Having it out of the way is ideal, especially on that side with no walkway. Just make sure to discuss with your contractor about the best way to seal up the old hole so you won’t have leaks or issues down the line.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll emphasize sealing that old hole well and see what they suggest.

When it comes to moving the downspout, just keep in mind that the gutters will need to be re-pitched to direct water properly. If your contractor is okay with re-pitching them, it could be a solid option. As for the patching, if it’s just temporary maintenance and you’re okay checking on it every couple years, that might work out fine. Just ensure they use a quality patching method!

Yeah, if they’re confident in the patch, it should hold, but regular maintenance could save you headaches later on.
