Should I Move My Kitchen Cabinets to Install New Flooring?

I'm planning to replace the cheap laminate flooring in my kitchen with new tongue-and-groove laminate. The builders originally put in the flooring before installing the cabinets, and now I'm faced with a dilemma. How much regret will I feel if I attempt to move the cabinets without causing damage in order to remove the old flooring completely? Would it be better to just cut the old flooring flush with the cabinets and install quarter round instead?

I think it’s way easier to leave the cabinets in place! Just make the new floor level with the existing height under appliances and use quarter round to finish it off. Plus, the manufacturer of my flooring recommended skipping under the cabinets entirely, so it might save you more work in the long run.

Moving counters and backsplashes during this process can be tricky. They often don’t come off cleanly, so just be prepared for the possibility that you might have to replace those if things go wrong. It’s always good to have a plan B in case the cabinets fall apart on you when you’re trying to get them out.

Exactly! I learned that the hard way. Better to keep it simple and do the flooring around the cabinets.

Only way to go! It’s less stressful than risking everything falling apart.

Honestly, you might end up really regretting trying to move those cabinets around. If you've got an island cabinet, you could maybe shift that, but otherwise, it's a hassle. My recommendation? Grab an oscillating multi-tool and just cut the old floor right up to the base of the cabinets. Then, lay down the new floor and finish it off with quarter round. It’ll save you a lot of headaches!

I totally agree with this! Trying to remove the cabinets sounds like a nightmare, and you might end up damaging them in the process.

For sure! I did a similar project and cutting around the cabinets was a lifesaver.
