Hey everyone! I'm debating what to do with my brick fireplace that used to be wood-burning and is now a gas setup. Some of the bricks were painted by the previous owner—about 30% of them in grey and beige. I'm considering whether I should paint the entire fireplace black to cover up the mismatched colors or if I should try to strip the paint to restore the original look. If you think stripping is the way to go, can you recommend any products, especially since I'm located in Canada? On the flip side, if you believe I should paint it, what kind of paint is best, and do I need to prime it first? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I usually lean towards not painting brick, even for interiors. If you're set on changing the look, I’d recommend limewashing instead; it’s more breathable and won’t trap moisture like paint can. But if you're not into that, I get it! Just keep in mind that painted bricks can be harder to strip later on if you change your mind.

Why do you feel that way? Is it purely about the looks? We’re not fans of limewash.
