Should I Patch This Hole Behind My Microwave or Keep It for Venting?

Hey everyone! I just took down my old microwave and found this hole in the wall behind it that's about 12 inches by 5 inches. I'm wondering if this hole is something I should worry about or if I can leave it as is when I put the new microwave in. By the way, we did have a mouse problem before, and I found some mouse droppings on top of the old microwave, so I'm a bit concerned it could have been a way in for them. Also, this hole is on an exterior wall. What do you think?

Definitely keep that hole, it sounds like a proper vent setup for your microwave. Just make sure your new microwave can vent out of that opening. It'll likely come with instructions on how to connect everything to the vent properly. That way, you'll minimize any issues with air recirculating back inside. Also, consider sealing it well to keep out any critters!

Good to know! I was worried it might be an issue, but sounds like it’ll help with airflow.

That hole is likely a vent from your old microwave's fan. If your new microwave supports venting to the outside, it would be a good idea to use that opening instead of just blowing air back into the room. It keeps everything more efficient and helps eliminate odors!

Thanks for the input! I didn’t even think about it being more efficient that way.

If you're looking at that hole, it could be a 3.25x10 vent size. Just grab a duct that fits along with an exterior vent cover with a damper flap to prevent unwanted guests. Check that your new microwave matches this size and that there are no gaps around the duct where pests could sneak in. It's a good opportunity to fix any past mouse issues!
