Should I Pot My Succulents or Leave Them in Nursery Pots?

I've been chatting with my wife about repotting some of my succulents since they've outgrown their nursery pots. She usually opts to leave them in those pots and just moves them to larger ones when needed, claiming that transferring them to ceramic or terracotta pots might damage them or even lead to their demise. Is there any truth to that? I actually have some oval planters that won't work with the nursery pots, so I really want to know if I should switch them over.

If you're looking for pot options, just pop 'planters' in the r/succulents search bar. Lots of people share their favorite pots and tips there! Trust me, we all love a good planter.

I get what your wife is saying, but as long as you're using a proper potting mix and your pots have drainage holes, you should be fine. I’ve been making my own mix with 2/3 pumice and 1/3 coco coir, plus some worm castings and slow-release fertilizer. It sounds like you’re on the right track! Just double-checking that mix is great for your plants.

You shouldn't worry about using regular pots for your succulents! Many people here use terracotta or ceramic pots without issues. Actually, unglazed terracotta is often recommended because it's porous and helps keep the soil dry, which is what succulents need. You can use other materials too, just make sure you have good drainage and the right soil mix.
