Should I Really Paint Over Wallpaper or Remove It First?

I've been debating whether it's a good idea to just paint over my wallpaper. I've heard some people say that doing so is like half-assing it and I'm worried about ending up with an unappealing finish. I wanted to take the wallpaper down, but I've seen plenty of advice saying that the removal process can be a real pain. All I want is for my home to look nice and not like I took shortcuts. What do you all think?

I recently tackled removing wallpaper from my bathroom, and while it was tedious, I believe it's worth it. Nothing beats having a smooth surface without the texture of old wallpaper peeking through your new paint.

I'd suggest removing the wallpaper as it will help your paint look way better in the end. If you do end up painting over it, using Zinsser Gardz can lock the glue down, followed by a good primer. Just remember, paint will emphasize any defects!

If you’re set on painting over it, make sure the wallpaper is really well adhered and doesn’t warp when you paint. Otherwise, you might end up with seams showing unless you spackle them. But honestly, removing the wallpaper is a solid choice for a great finish.
