Should I Remove My Popcorn Ceilings or Leave Them?

I own a house from 1986 and I've recently remodeled the downstairs, but the upstairs bedrooms still have popcorn ceilings. I've been getting quotes around $2300+ to have them removed and painted, and I'm considering doing it myself, which might save some cash but comes with the risk of making a mess or ruining the walls and carpet. I'm torn between three options: 1) Do it myself and risk chaos, 2) Hire a pro and spend a lot more, or 3) Just leave them for now and deal with it later if I can afford it. What do you all think? I live alone and I'm on a tight budget right now.

I scraped the popcorn ceilings in my place, and honestly, it wasn't as hard as I thought. The mess is real though! The tough part is getting everything smooth afterward. We had a pro do the skim coat and paint, and that made a big difference. If you're up for it, DIY could save you money, just prepare for some cleanup.

Good call on the testing. If there’s no asbestos, scraping it yourself and hiring out for the finishing touches can really help.

It really depends on how much you dislike the popcorn ceilings. I personally find them messy and unattractive, but removing them is a hassle. You might want to check if there's any asbestos, especially since it was still used in housing up until the early '90s. Better safe than sorry, right?

Totally agree! While I don't mind a bit of texture, I get how it can affect resale value.

I weighed the options and finally bit the bullet to remove mine, and I’m glad I did! Sure, it was a lot of work, especially the sanding and skimming part, but the end result made my home feel so much fresher. Plus, I didn't have any issues with the carpet getting messed up—just used drop cloths. If you can find a good pro to help afterward, you should go for it!

Definitely! Smooth ceilings look way better, and it's easier to clean too.
