Should I Repair My Broken Patio Glass Door or Replace It Entirely?

I recently ran into a bit of a dilemma with my patio glass doors after my son accidentally broke one of the glass panels. I've been getting quotes on repairs, and I received one estimate for $875 just to replace the glass. Another company offered to replace the whole door and frame for $3,100 but pointed out that replacing the glass would be a more budget-friendly option. However, they raised concerns about potential insulation issues that might come up. This door is quite old, and even when we tried to replace the outdoor screen door, we discovered it was a custom size that's nearly impossible to find. To make things worse, the DIY track keeps falling apart. I'm considering whether I should just replace the glass and save some cash or go for a complete replacement. What do you all think?

Honestly, at some point you have to say enough is enough. If this door is already looking rough and has been causing problems, maybe it's best to just replace it entirely. You'll save yourself the hassle later on.

Replacing just the glass is definitely cheaper, but it sounds like you might want to think about other issues with the door. If you decide on just fixing the glass, make sure you're okay with the door's overall look. Also, consider switching to a different style. Some folks don’t love sliding glass doors. Maybe this could be a good opportunity for you to try a swinging door instead! They're usually easier with kids and require less upkeep, but just double-check if the glass can be replaced later, as some swing doors have fixed panels.

I hear you on that! I have kids too, and I worry about a swinging door being any safer with them and their friends running around. Any suggestions for styles that might be better?
