Should I Replace My Breaker Box with Copper If I Have Aluminum Wiring?

I recently purchased a house from the 70s that has aluminum wiring, and I'm currently getting quotes to have it pigtailed. A lot of the contractors are suggesting that I also replace the breaker box with a copper one. While I understand that might be the best option, I'm curious about how crucial this is. The breaker box is located in a detached garage, which seems like it poses less of a fire risk, and there haven't been any issues with it since it was installed years ago. Is spending thousands of dollars on this replacement really worth it? I'd appreciate any expert opinions!

We recently updated our breaker box because it was outdated and we discovered it wasn't grounded! It's surprising how many outlets and switches can accumulate in a seemingly small house. If you're planning to make changes, keep in mind that safety is key!

Definitely check out the risks that come with aluminum wiring. While it can be safe if handled correctly, issues like corrosion and poor connections can arise over time. I’d highly recommend getting a certified electrician to inspect it. Also, keep in mind that many insurance companies won't insure homes with aluminum wiring, so addressing this could save you a lot of headaches later! Plus, codes have changed recently regarding detached buildings, so your setup might need to be updated.

I think the best approach is to have a few electricians come out for an inspection and estimates. They can give you a clearer picture of what's urgent and what can wait. They’ll also know the current codes and the condition of your wiring.

It's really important to consider your local regulations. If you start messing with that type of installation, you could be opening yourself up to liability, and insurance may not cover issues if the work isn't done correctly. It might be best to hold off on any drastic changes until a professional can take a look.
