I recently bought an older home that's over a century old, and I've noticed that the baseboards on the main level are covered in thick paint. I'm really not a fan of how wide they are. Some areas of the house have been updated, so we want to repaint but I'm worried about the potential damage to the plaster walls when doing so. Given that this house isn't perfectly level and has settled a bit, I'm unsure if taking on this project is a good idea for first-time home buyers like us who lack DIY experience. Should we attempt to remove and replace these baseboards, or would it be better to leave everything as is? You can see the current baseboards in the linked images, with the thick ones being particularly unsightly. I would really love to replace them with a style that matches other parts of the house.

Removing the baseboards is definitely an option! Just keep in mind that matching the rough texture of the walls when you patch them could be a bit tricky. But if you're planning to sand down the texture while painting, you're on the right track!
