I'm moving into a new home built in 2020 and I'm concerned about the large white grout lines. My current home's grout is a disaster—constantly discolored and needs cleaning weekly, especially with three dogs. It's also quite soft, and some of it comes off when I clean. I'd love to know the pros and cons of sealing grout. Does the type of grout matter for stain resistance? How can I find out what kind of grout I have? I'm hoping sealing can help avoid the issues I've faced before, like uneven dirty grout. I've read a lot about this already but just can't find a solid answer.

Identifying your grout type can be tricky, especially if your home is mass-produced. Traditional grouts definitely benefit from sealing. If your new place is from a local builder, I'd recommend reaching out to them—most modern grout types, like Mapei Ultracolor, can be sealed even if they say they don’t need it. Epoxy grout typically doesn’t require sealing. If you're concerned, sealing might be a good idea!
Honestly, sealing white grout can help a bit, but it will still get dirty. I clean mine with a steam cleaner once a year. It really depends on your maintenance routine as well!

Thanks for the tip! It's not a mass-produced home, but I’ll ask the builder what they used. I want to avoid the issues I'm having with my current grout.
