I'm considering replacing my old gas water heater, which has a big tank, with a tankless electric heater. I've heard electric tankless units can be cheaper than gas ones, but I'm unsure about the whole process. If I switch to electric, will I need a gas plumber to deal with my existing gas line? Should I call my gas company to cap it? I'm not completely against going for a gas tankless heater if it doesn't significantly drive up my costs, especially when factoring in installation. I want to weigh my options carefully before making the switch!

If you're already hooked up to gas, going with a gas tankless heater might be your best bet. It's usually cheaper to install and operate, especially since you won't have to deal with upgrading your electric panel for an electric setup. Plus, gas tankless models are pretty efficient!
Make sure you check the space in your electrical panel before going electric! If you don't have enough room, you’ll need to upgrade, and that could add to the overall cost. If it turns out to be complicated, sticking with a gas tankless may save you some hassle and money in the long run.
