Should I Switch from Gas to Electric Appliances in My Home?

I've recently been approved for a program in Illinois that can help switch my gas appliances to electric ones. My current gas furnace is over 20 years old, and while I really want to make the switch, I'm worried about potentially higher electricity bills since I already pay a lot for electric. It's also super cold on the main floor while the upstairs gets really hot. What do you all think about going all-electric?

How much more do you end up paying for electricity compared to gas? Here in California, the rates are about four times higher for electric!

That's a worry for me too! I'm not sure what the rates are like right now, but I know they fluctuate.

Just make sure that if you go electric, you consider getting a heat pump—they're really efficient!

I made the switch from a gas water heater to a heat pump tank, and now my hot water costs less per gallon. I also went for an induction stove over gas, which has been great. If I didn’t have an electric dryer already, I'd definitely get a heat pump dryer since that would save me money too. Your electric bill will probably go up, but I’d hope it’s less than the savings on your gas bill.
