Should I Turn Off the Water and Water Heater Before Going on Vacation?

I'm heading out of town for five days and won't have anyone checking on my house while I'm gone. I have a newer gas water heater, and I'm wondering if it's safe to turn off the main water supply and leave the gas water heater on. What do you all think?

I slightly disagree! It's actually pretty smart to turn off the water supply when you're gone, even if it's just for a few days. While the risk of something going wrong is small, if a water heater or pipe does fail, it can lead to a lot of damage. Better to be safe than sorry! Plus, my insurance company always recommends it.

In my experience, it's usually fine to leave the water heater on for a short trip like that. I mean, it's only five days, not a long time. Just make sure everything else is in good shape before you leave.

Honestly, I've left my water and heater on for longer trips without any issues. But if it gives you peace of mind, you should definitely turn off the water. Everyone’s comfort levels are different, so do what feels right for you!
