Should I Use a Random Orbit Sander or Hand Sand Between Coats of Poly and Spirits?

I'm wondering whether it's better to use a random orbit sander or just sand by hand between coats of a 50/50 mix of polyurethane and mineral spirits. What do you guys recommend?

Generally, it's best to stick with hand sanding unless you're trying to smooth out drips. If that's the case, you could use the orbital sander very lightly.

Thanks! So just hand sanding for regular coats, right? What grits do you think I should use to get that glassy finish instead of a texture?

I never use power sanders when finishing. For oil-based poly, I usually go with light to moderate use of 000 and 0000 steel wool between coats. After a few coats, the 0000 works great. Just make sure you're applying it with a cloth to minimize brush strokes.

That makes sense! I've been using the 50/50 mix with a rag too, but I accidentally used a terrycloth on the last coat, and it left a rough texture.
