Should I Use Exterior Stain or Paint for My Pine Board and Batten House?

I'm in the process of getting quotes to repaint my house, which is made of pine board and batten. One of the painters suggested using exterior stain instead of traditional paint. The house is currently painted, but the paint is peeling in several areas. I'm a bit skeptical because it seems to me that stain might not last as long as paint. Has anyone had experience with using stain versus paint on this type of material? I'm particularly curious about durability and maintenance between the two options.

It sounds like the painter is suggesting solid stain, which is tinted like paint rather than being a clear finish. From what I’ve found while researching this for my own house, paint generally lasts longer but requires more preparation. Prep work can include sanding, and painted surfaces may eventually peel or chip, leading to more extensive future maintenance. Stain, especially solid color stain, may not need the same level of prep, which could save time and cash in the long run. Just a heads up: paint usually offers better UV resistance, which could be a factor if your house gets a lot of sun.

Yeah, you're right! Reapplying stain does seem easier, but if the surface is rough, you're probably going to need more upkeep. The thought of doing that every few years instead of every decade is definitely daunting!
