I'm currently replacing my roof and considering adding solar panels. I've heard from various solar companies that I should use ice and water shield beneath the shingles for better protection against water leaks. Typically, ice and water shield is only installed about 3 feet from the drip edge, while synthetic underlayment is used for the rest. However, I'm worried that covering the whole roof with ice and water shield might cause moisture issues since it isn't breathable like regular underlayment. What do you all think?

I think it really comes down to leak prevention. Solar panels create a lot of penetrations in the roof, so if it were me, I'd want to maximize the lifespan of the roof and ensure it's as leak-proof as possible. Covering the entire roof with ice and water shield might just be a smart choice if you're as cautious as I would be!
As long as your attic is properly ventilated, you shouldn't have any problems with moisture. Good ventilation is key to preventing issues with any roofing method, so make sure that's sorted out!
I don't think the breathability will be an issue. The real concern comes from the number of screws that will be penetrating your shingles when installing the solar panels. I'd definitely recommend adding the ice and water shield for extra protection against leaks. It's worth it!
