Should I Use Rocks at the Bottom of My Pot for Succulents?

I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions about whether it's a good idea to put large rocks at the bottom of pots when planting succulents, or just to go straight with the succulent mix. Some say rocks help with drainage, while others warn it can create a perched water table. What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Honestly, there's no real debate here. Scientific studies have shown it's not beneficial to add rocks. It often leads to issues for succulents, especially if you're relying on pots without drainage holes. Stick with a gritty mix and a proper container instead!

From what I've heard, putting rocks at the bottom isn’t great for succulents. It can actually create a water table that traps moisture instead of draining it. Instead, try mixing a good amount of inorganic grit into your soil—around 50% is a solid ratio. This really helps with drainage and keeps your plants happier!

What kind of grit do you recommend? I’ve heard about perlite and pumice but want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff!

Definitely go for perlite or crushed pumice! Those are widely available and work wonders for drainage.

I agree with the others—just avoid the rocks. You really just need a gritty soil mix that's suited to your climate. That makes all the difference!
