I'm trying to decide between using a 30x20" piece of stainless steel or a matching countertop material as a backsplash behind my stove. I want something that will protect the wall, but I'm not a fan of tiled backsplashes. My stove has no back since the controls are in front, so aesthetics and functionality are both important. My concern with using the countertop material is that it might cause my oven to stick out too far from the wall. What do you think?

If you're considering stainless steel, think about the coating options available. You might save some money by buying a sheet and cutting it to size if you need something custom! Just make sure it's a bit wider than the stove on each side to catch any splatter; maybe 2 inches extra should do the trick. Balancing the depth difference with your countertop backsplash could be a bit tricky, though!
It's really a matter of personal preference! Both options will work functionally, but stainless steel tends to be more durable and easier to clean. Plus, it can have a sleek, modern look. In terms of price, stainless steel can be more affordable too, depending on the type you choose.
