Starting a Mini Garden in an Apartment – Is It Possible?

Asked By G4rdenEnthu$iast On

I'm living in a small apartment with only a little balcony and some window space, and I've been itching to grow something—anything! I want to know if it's realistic to start a tiny garden given my limited light and space. I'd also appreciate any beginner tips or plant recommendations that can survive my occasional forgetfulness when it comes to watering.

You might want to look into an aquaponics system for your counter. I got one on Amazon for around $65, and it works pretty well. Just keep in mind you can't grow really large plants unless you have a bigger setup. It's a fun way to grow herbs and smaller veggies.

For a no-fuss option, consider a small terrarium. Since it’s a closed system, you won’t have to worry about watering often. You can use a plant like pothos, which is easy to care for and can thrive just sitting in water.

Absolutely, you can definitely have a mini garden! If you have a balcony railing, hanging baskets could be a great way to utilize that space. Since you mentioned you might forget to water, consider using self-watering systems, like a gallon jug turned upside down with a small hole at the bottom to slowly release water. Just keep in mind, being up high, your plants will need a good amount of water. For easy care, succulents and cacti are perfect for your situation since they don't require a lot of watering.

Yeah, making sure they get enough sunlight is key too! Just check the direction of your balcony. It can make a huge difference!
