Hey everyone! I'm excited to start my gardening journey now that I've moved into a sunny home with a backyard. The space has its fair share of weeds, and I need to start almost from scratch. I've decided to plant some Hostas, Black-eyed Susans, Blanket Flowers, Daylilies, and Garden Phlox. I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about this. What are some budget-friendly methods I can use to get started?

One great way to save money is to join local buy nothing groups. You might find people giving away divisions of Hostas or Daylilies. It's a fantastic way to get plants for free!
Budget-friendly gardening in Ontario can be a challenge, but it’s definitely possible! Consider buying perennials at the end of the season when they are often marked down. You can also look out for sales at local nurseries. An even cheaper option is growing your plants from seeds. If you scatter seeds in your garden, you'll gauge how well they thrive. For dealing with those pesky weeds, dig up the top layer of soil and set aside any rocks for a path. You can use kitchen scraps and cardboard for layer composting and top it off with mulch or leaves. You’ll be able to plant right away, but if funds are tight, just let some branches and yard waste break down into soil.

Would sowing the seeds inside be better?
