Starting Woodcarving in Egypt: Any Tips for Harder Woods?

Hey everyone! I've finally decided to dive into woodcarving, something I've always wanted to try. I've been reading that basswood is ideal for beginners, but I can't find it anywhere in Egypt. Locals told me that sheesham wood is much more common here. I've got some small blocks of sheesham, but it seems pretty tough to carve and takes a lot of effort. Does anyone have tips to make carving easier with harder woods like sheesham?

Welcome to the world of woodcarving! If you’re having trouble finding basswood, you might want to check out Amazon's Egyptian website where they sell basswood blocks, like a box from BeaverCraft. That could make getting your hands on some easier!

Thanks a lot! Is basswood really as easy to carve as they make it look in the videos, or is that just for show? 😅

For dealing with tougher woods like sheesham, make sure you have a good chisel and gouge set, along with a mallet. It can help you work more effectively and reduce the strain! Also, consider trying other woods like cherry or walnut if you can find them; they can be more manageable too!
