Strange Rotten Egg Smell in My House at Night – Need Help!

I've been dealing with a frustrating issue for the past few months: there's this awful smell like rotten eggs that only appears in my hallway and bedrooms at night, typically from around 11 PM to 1 AM. We've checked for gas leaks multiple times and everything is clear. It's definitely not coming from the bathroom, since that room doesn't smell at all. The strange part is my neighbor had a similar problem months ago, but the fire department's inspection turned up nothing. I really need advice on how to find the source of this smell, especially since my husband finally noticed it too!

You might want to check your main drain. I had a similar issue where a small leak in the P-trap of my drain caused awful smells. I just fill it with water weekly to keep the stink away until I can get it fixed. If you have something like that, especially near a furnace, it could be pushing the smell through your home. It’s worth investigating while you sort this out!

Have you tried the process of elimination? I know it’s a pain, but moving items around to see if the smell follows something could help. Also, since your neighbor just shares a fence, that might not be related, but it’s still good to check if windows are open or if any appliances are causing this.

It sounds like you might be dealing with hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which can smell like rotten eggs. It’s not a joke—high levels can be dangerous! This can come from things like sewage or certain environmental factors. I’d advise calling a plumber to get it looked at and keep your home well-ventilated just in case.
