I found some faintly sweet smelling white smoke coming from a pipe in my laundry room. This pipe goes into the floor and isn't attached to any appliances, plus the washer and dryer were off at the time. The smoke lasted for about 10 minutes after I first noticed it, but I'm not sure how long it had been coming out before that. I think there's a crawlspace under the house, and after noticing the smoke, I closed the door and started ventilating the room. I'm just a renter, but my landlord doesn't think it's serious enough to check out. However, it seems concerning to me! Does anyone know what this could be and if I should be worried?

Yikes! That sounds unsettling. I'd be cautious breathing anything like sewer gas or lye. If you can, maybe plug that pipe or extend it outside for safety. Definitely not ideal for your health!
I really recommend checking for any updates in your municipality about sewer work because that could be related too. If it happens again, definitely give your landlord a nudge again!
One thing to check is if other houses nearby were seeing similar smoke. It could be linked to plumbing issues if they were doing repairs in your area. Sometimes plumbers use smoke testing to find leaks, and it might just be that the pipe you see has either a dry trap or wasn't meant to vent like this. It's a little strange that it had a smell, though! Glad it turned out to be something manageable for you!

Totally agree! I never knew smoke tests could produce something like that but it makes sense. Glad you're safe!
