Stressed About My Garage Renovation Gone Wrong – Need Advice!

I'm currently renovating my garage into a home gym, but hit a major snag. Initially, the contractor said it was an easy job that would finish quickly, but after some demo, we found out that the garage's front structure wasn't sound and needed an unexpected $4100 repair. I also noticed a crack in the foundation and when I asked the contractor, he assured me it was fine. But when they leveled the floor, concrete leaked out of that crack. I've raised this issue again but he just brushed it off and insisted it's solid now.

For the walls, he used plywood and sealed the seams with painter's tape, which has since bubbled. When I mentioned this, he said fixing it would cost more money. The garage doors he was supposed to reinstall aren't sealing properly either. Now, he's about to apply a product on the floors, but I found out it needs 30 days of drying time first. He keeps asking for final payment, even though the job isn't finished and many issues remain unaddressed. I'm really stressed out as first-time homeowners and have already consulted a lawyer for advice. Any tips on how to handle this situation?

It sounds like you're in a tough spot! First off, definitely get a home inspector to take a look—it's often cheaper than you think and they can provide clarity on the structural issues. Make sure to find someone who specializes in foundations to get the best advice.

This renovation sounds like a total nightmare! The best course of action right now is to document everything meticulously and hold off on that final payment until all of your issues are addressed. Your leverage is in the money—keep as much back as you can until you’re satisfied with the work.
