Hey everyone, I'm reaching out for some help with growing Lily of the Valley. My daughter's birth flower is important to me since we're approaching what would have been her first birthday. I've been trying to grow them since last fall, but despite planting multiple rhizomes twice, nothing seems to be working. I've done a ton of research and have tried to get the right soil, but I'm at my wit's end. I know that they can be invasive, but I'm looking for practical advice on how to make them thrive in my garden. Is there a way to make my current soil more acidic or add something to help them grow? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've had success growing mine in dappled shade with clay-based soil, but it's crucial that they don’t sit under trees where water can get trapped. I bury my rhizomes about 3 inches deep. Since you're in Oregon, check out your local climate. They like it cool, so if it gets too hot in your area, they might struggle. Good luck, and don’t get discouraged!
It sounds like you're doing your best! They actually prefer loamy soil but are pretty adaptable. They like some shade, but too much can cause issues. In full sun, they can end up crispy by summer. Just make sure not to drown them; good drainage is key. Also, focus on keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged during their growing season, which is mostly spring and early summer.
