Hey everyone, I have a Ryobi trim router with both 6mm and 6.35mm collets, and I use a mix of router bits, from budget to some pricier compression and down cut spiral bits. I'm having a lot of issues with chatter and uneven cuts, even when I take very light passes, like just 1mm. For example, today I tried making some grooves for a bolt, and the chatter was really bad. I feel like when I watch how others route, their experience looks so much smoother. Is this likely an issue with the router itself? Would upgrading to a more premium router that supports 8mm bits solve my problems? I find that light edge trimming like round overs or 45-degree bevels is usually fine, but everything else tends to be a struggle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

While 6mm bits can work fine, the motor in that trim router might not have enough power for everything you're trying to do. Chatter could definitely be a sign of that, especially if your bits aren't dull.
Chatter can be frustrating! Check if your bit is properly secured; if it has a lot of play despite being tightened well, that might cause issues. Also, make sure the bit fits the collet correctly. If your 1mm cut was a plunge cut, cutting on both sides might have contributed to the chatter too.
I see what you mean. I was doing some plunge cutting, so that could factor in. I'll check the bits and collet again!
Trim routers are really meant for lighter tasks, so you might want to consider getting a bigger router. They have more power and can handle deeper cuts without as much chatter.
It sounds like it might be time to upgrade your router! A more powerful machine could really make a difference in the quality of your cuts.

That makes sense! I've noticed some unevenness, which made me think it could be the router itself. Thanks for the insight!
