I'm working on a landscaping project for class using AutoCAD, and I wanted to include a flowering climbing plant for a pergola. The hypothetical house is located in zone 5b. I find Wisteria sinensis really beautiful, but I'm confused about whether it's a perennial or not. Some sources say it's perennial, but I also came across a book stating it's better suited for zone 6. Furthermore, I've read that it's invasive and difficult to maintain. Should I go ahead and add it to my project, or are there better options? Also, I'm still learning English, so I appreciate your kindness!

Wisteria can get really heavy, so keep that in mind for your pergola structure. If your professor is strict, they might care about how sturdy your design is. I recommend looking into Jasmine or Honeysuckle instead – they're lovely options. Even grapevines could work, though they do take time to establish. Just think about the appearance you want for your project.
Have you considered using Clematis? It's a great alternative to Wisteria and generally more manageable too!
