Suggestions for Planting Roses and Climbers in My New Garden

I'm pretty new to gardening and have just moved into a new build house that could really use some greenery. I have a couple of ideas and would love some feedback. I'm thinking about putting roses on a trellis near the entrance door and adding a planter below the ground floor window at the front of the house. Additionally, I want to have a climber against the wall next to the parking bay on the side of the house. Does this sound like a good plan? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

That sounds like a great start! Just keep in mind that some climbers can harm your brickwork, so it's better to choose ones that need a support system like trellises or wires rather than those that cling. Consider planting beginner-friendly options like clematis or honeysuckle. Wisteria is also lovely, but make sure to avoid ivy since it can be invasive. Also, remember that anything you put in a pot will require regular watering and feeding, so use bigger pots to help retain moisture!

Definitely check out climbing plants that have year-round appeal! Some roses create beautiful colorful hips and can flower for a long time. For your planters, I suggest adding some drought-tolerant perennials along with colorful seasonal flowers like violas or Mediterranean herbs such as thyme.

Consider the orientation of your house! If the side wall is south-facing, you might be able to grow fan-trained fruit trees against it. How about a cherry and an apple? They'd provide gorgeous blossoms in spring, tasty fruit in summer, and beautiful foliage in autumn. It’s usually easier to plant directly in the ground instead of using pots, and try to keep a foot or more distance from the wall for better care.
