Hey everyone! I recently moved into a house with a 100lb propane tank that only serves my oven, and I'm looking to switch to a 30lb tank instead. Refilling the large tank once a year is a hassle because of its weight, and since I'm just 5 minutes from the refill station, a smaller tank seems more convenient. I'm totally new to this, though. Can I just get a standard 30lb tank and hook it up? The current hose looks like a flexible metal type. Would I need a longer hose? Or, do I need to call a plumber to adjust the connections? Also, is there a recommended brand or type of tank that's safer or better? Thanks for your help!

You can definitely switch to a 30lb tank, just connect it the same way as your current 100lb one. If you need to replace the current copper line to make it fit, that's doable too! Using a shorter hose would be simple; just look for a flexible line with the right fittings at a camping or tractor supply store. It’s also a good idea to build a stand for the tank to keep it off the ground and prevent rusting.
Yeah, it's pretty straightforward! Just make sure to turn off the gas first and keep track of the fittings you unscrew. Taking the old line with you when you shop is also a smart move; they can help you find the right replacements.
A 30lb bottle should work fine, but keep an eye on the level—especially in winter, they say it might struggle to run your oven once it’s under half full. Also, don't forget about building a stand or concrete pad; keeping it off the ground can really help prevent rust. If you're considering other sizes, a 40lb bottle might be a good option for you too!
Good to know about the tank levels! I definitely want to avoid any issues in the winter. A 40lb might be more manageable for me since I'm lifting that 100lb tank now.
For sure! Just make sure the size is manageable in your vehicle. And when you’re out shopping, check if renting is cheaper than buying the gas—sometimes renting gives you better rates!

Thanks for confirming that! I appreciate it. Is it complicated to replace the copper line? Do I just unscrew it?
