Switching from Grid-Tied to Battery Backup for Solar Panels: How Do I Start?

Hey everyone! I'm new to this whole solar setup thing and need some advice. I currently have a small solar panel array that feeds power into the grid, but when there's a power outage, my panels turn off to prevent any potential shock to linemen. I'd really like to modify my system to power a small battery instead, so I can use an extension cord for lights and maybe keep a dorm fridge running for my medications during outages. I've read a lot about larger generator setups, but I can't seem to find any info on smaller configurations. My system has 12 panels that produce around 20 kWh a day in the summer and uses an Enphase inverter. I'm not super tech-savvy, but I'm eager to learn so I can explain what I want to an electrician. It feels unnecessary to spend $2k on a portable solar generator when I already have these panels on my roof. Any thoughts or advice?

The size of your setup is a factor here too! You might want to check out the EG4 products. If you want to keep selling extra power back to the grid while having battery backup, a hybrid inverter like the 12kpv or 18kpv could be the way to go. If going off-grid is more your style, the off-grid inverter is cheaper and simpler!

uNewbieDIY: Good advice! I'm actually trying to set up the disconnect myself for easier installations.

Since you're using Enphase microinverters, you'll need to stick with their battery options to keep your system operational during blackouts. That's one of the trade-offs with microinverters—they require compatible batteries to work effectively when the grid goes down. Just keep that in mind when talking to a professional!

uSolarN3wb: Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely consider that.
