Taking on a DIY Retaining Wall – Am I Crazy?

Hey everyone! So, my wife and I want to transform our backyard into a beautiful terraced garden, but we've hit a snag with the costs of hiring someone for a retaining wall – it's out of our budget! I've gotten some quotes, but they want to do the entire yard as one big wall or all at once, which isn't feasible for us right now. I think I can do this myself since I've done some reading and watched a bunch of videos about retaining walls and drainage. I plan to tackle it one wall at a time over about three years, starting from the bottom up. The walls will be 3 feet high and around 36 feet long, with some stairs added too. I'm asking for any advice you might have on this – am I biting off more than I can chew, or can I actually pull this off? Any tips or things I should watch out for would be appreciated!

You’re definitely not in over your head! Just do some research on building techniques. I’d watch a few YouTube videos to get a sense of the process. It’s not rocket science, but there are important details to keep in mind!

Make sure you have some help, especially for digging footers! That's a lot of heavy work for one person. You could consider renting a mini-excavator if your budget allows, but if not, hiring local teens for the heavy lifting could be a good alternative.

I thought moving the bricks would be the hardest part! Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into some help for that.
