When we moved into our house, the garage had a strong weed smell—probably from an old grow room. Thankfully, the smell faded over time without much effort. But, smoke might be trickier to deal with, I'm not entirely sure.
If you're really concerned, consider renting a large ozone machine for a while—it works wonders! Just make sure to do this before moving in, then let the house air out afterward.
