I'm considering adding a half bathroom but got a quote for $20k just for the sewer line installation. The estimate dropped to $10k if I handle the digging, but honestly, if I'm going to dig up the concrete, why not just finish the entire job myself? I know there are specific requirements for plumbing, but it seems excessive to pay 10k for a project that looks manageable. I'm thinking I could install the PVC or ABS piping, ensure the proper slope, and even add a vent myself. Do you have any success or horror stories to share for this type of project?

I did my own sewer line to the city main—definitely a tough job but worth it if you’re up for it. You can save a ton with enough determination!
Consider if the pipe under your slab is PVC or something like iron that needs to be removed. Sometimes quotes are high because contractors are just not interested in the job. I live in an old house, and they want $21k for a full gut job, but my bathroom doesn't have a slab to break, just old iron pipes. Definitely get a second opinion!
I just remodeled my basement bathroom, including running a new sewer line and everything, for around $2,500. I ended up doing all the digging and purchasing materials myself. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, it could be a huge money saver!
It sounds pricey, but plumbing is no joke. Be aware that there’s a lot involved: digging, removing old pipes, and then redoing everything. I’d get a few quotes and weigh your options before deciding.
I tackled a similar job during COVID and can confirm it wasn’t as easy as it looks! For $10k, I’d definitely recommend getting multiple quotes. I went with PVC, which was pretty straightforward but still challenging. Just be prepared for inspection requirements like pressure tests; they can complicate things.
Definitely ask for an itemized quote. Many contractors these days avoid giving detailed estimates, which can be frustrating. Just be clear on what work they will actually do for that price!
Also consider if there are any permitting issues. Some places have high fees regardless of the actual work needed. Just check your local requirements!
