I haven't used one myself, but I've seen a few small business owners using the Square Reader, and they seem really happy with it! It connects easily to your phone, which is a bonus. Just be aware that there might be some percentage fee for transactions.
I usually expect my clients to pay within 48 hours of sending an invoice. I recommend being upfront about what you expect regarding payment. If your customers are aware of your payment terms and you've communicated that well, it should help minimize any chasing up. I personally send my invoices via email and expect payment through bank transfer since I don't handle cash or checks.
