Three Sisters Gardening: Why Do My Beans Overpower the Corn?

I've been experimenting with a three sisters garden for the past three years, but I've hit a snag. Every August, my bean plants end up pulling over the Flint corn I'm growing. I'm in my mid-40s and have always wanted to set up one of these gardens since reading about them as a kid. I've learned a lot through trial and error, but this issue has me stumped. Is it possibly a nutrient deficiency that weakens the corn stalks? Could it be related to the type of corn I'm using? I never thought about needing stakes or supports, but should I? I'd love advice from anyone who has successfully grown a three sisters garden, including any tips or tricks you might have!

I saw a tip from a YouTube channel called Homegrown Handgathered, where they mentioned that beans can actually help support corn by wrapping around multiple stalks. Maybe try planting your corn a bit closer together so the beans can get a good grip? Also, consider starting your corn a week or two earlier; it might give the stalks a better chance to establish. It’s a great practice, but I can understand the challenges, especially with limited space! Good luck!

Was corn shorter back in the day? I’ve read that the three sisters method was based on varieties of corn and beans that were much sturdier than what we typically use now. If you're committed to this growing style, it might help to look into those traditional cultivars that were originally used. They could potentially give you a better chance of success!

This is really interesting! I’m also trying the three sisters method for the first time this year, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this problem too. If it’s due to nutrient deficiencies, I might be in trouble since my beans are looking a bit yellow, despite my attempts to fertilize. My corn is thriving, though, so that’s a plus!
