Tips for a Smooth Basement Demolition Experience

I'm tackling a big project: demolishing my old basement from the 70s to start fresh. I've got some great friends and family who will help me out, and a few of them have construction experience, which is a huge plus! I've already gathered some tools, gloves, buckets, masks, and earplugs to prepare. I'm also planning to stock up on refreshments, snacks, and even have a BBQ to thank everyone afterward. Does anyone have additional advice on what I can do or buy to make this experience smoother and quicker?

Definitely stock up on food and drinks for everyone. Gloves and goggles are a must because dust is going to be everywhere. Make sure to communicate clearly with your friends—ask them what they are comfortable doing instead of just assigning tasks. Having a shared goal can really unite the team!

For waste disposal, consider using bagsters for easier cleanup, or, if your budget allows, rent a bigger dumpster. You can also save any wall studs—lumber prices are rising!

Oh, I didn't mention that I already have a 40-yard dumpster! I do want to keep the wall studs, but there’s tar paper on the concrete; any advice on that?

You might want a plan for disposing of all the debris. Is there a window you could use to pass stuff out? Trust me, the stairs will be a pain after the 50th trip carrying stuff up!

Appreciate it! I have a container already but I'm going to look into a window option for easier transport.

Keep in mind that it can get really dusty, and there may be lead or asbestos to consider. Make sure to clean up as you go to avoid disturbing debris too much. Having extra protective gear, like coveralls, can also be really helpful!

Good point. But I tested for asbestos already, and it came back negative!

Consider picking up a couple of wrecking bars; they’ll really make your life easier when it comes to tearing things down. You can find a good one at your local hardware store!

Thanks for the tip! I only have some shorter ones, so I'll definitely grab a couple of those today.
