Tips for Assembling IKEA PAX Wardrobes in a Tight Walk-In Space

Hey everyone! I'm getting ready to set up some IKEA PAX wardrobe units (they're 236cm tall) in my new walk-in wardrobe. The ceiling's about 240cm, so I'm looking at just a tiny bit of clearance above the units. I really want to nail the fit and finish, so I need to know how much space I should leave on the sides and between the units and walls for filler panels.

Here's what I'm working with:

- Cabinet 1: 58 × 150 cm
- Cabinet 2: 58 × 150 cm
- Cabinet 3: 35 × 100 cm
- Cabinet 4: 58 × 100 cm
- Cabinet 5: 58 × 50 cm

When lined up in a U-shape without gaps, they take up roughly 216cm × 150cm. Since the fully assembled PAX units are too tall to fit through my door (it's only 206cm high), I'll need to build them inside the walk-in wardrobe itself.

Has anyone here had experience assembling PAX units in a small space like this? What's the best way to handle the clearance for those filler panels to achieve that tidy, built-in look? Thanks in advance for any tips!

I recommend checking out some YouTube videos! I saw one where the user built the PAX units upright inside and then tilted them into place. With your 4cm clearance above, that might actually work for your situation! Just make sure you have everything prepped for assembly since space can get tight.

I've been in your shoes before with IKEA wardrobes. One of my best tips is to install nailers flush to the front of the wardrobes that meet the walls while you're building. This allows you some leeway to cut the trim pieces accurately after installation. Trust me, it's hard to get the measurements perfect beforehand, so this method really helps out!

Great advice! I'm planning to finalize the dimensions of my wardrobe space soon. If the total footprint is 216 cm × 150 cm, would it be smart to build the room to about 230 cm × 160 cm for a little extra room for fillers?
