Tips for Attending a Tool Collector’s Meet?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

I'm excited to attend a tool collector's meet after being inspired by a Naked Woodworker video. As I'm starting my collection from scratch, I could use some advice on making sure I get good value for my purchases. What kind of tools should I be looking to buy at the meet, and are there any that are better off bought new? Also, I'd love to know the best resources for learning how to restore old tools. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Keep an eye out for any cracks on the plane bodies and ensure all the parts are intact. Vintage hand planes are generally a good buy, but router and specialty planes often aren't worth the high prices people ask for since they are less available.

Don’t forget about tailgating, which starts early! Arrive while everyone is setting up to catch some great deals, and hang around until the end when sellers might be more willing to negotiate prices. It’s a fun time—good luck finding some rust treasures!

Totally agree! And don’t be afraid to haggle a bit; offering $10 less than the asking price could lead to a good compromise!

Collectors can be pretty picky, so if you're after usable tools, you might find some great deals! For example, a type 1-4 #7 plane could cost a couple hundred bucks if it's in mint condition. In contrast, a type 15 #7 might only set you back about $10 since it's not as collectible. Just make sure you know what you're looking for and what the collectors might be after.

Haha, I don’t think I’ve seen a type 15 that cheap in years! Most #7s are going for around $100-$120 now.

I’m in the same boat! I want tools that are functional rather than collectible.

I suggest buying shoulder planes new since they need to be perfectly square. If an old metal body is bent, it’s hard to fix. For advice on tools, Chris Schwarz’s "The Anarchist’s Tool Chest" is a great resource. Also, check out Paul Sellers on YouTube or Rex Krueger for tips. There are plenty of great resources right here too!

Pro tip: definitely bring a lot of cash! It’ll help you snag good deals as you won't have to rely on cards or apps.
