I'm planning to make my first raised vegetable bed and need some advice! I'm unsure about the best non-toxic, food-safe methods to preserve the wood for longevity. I've been overwhelmed by all the different information out there, so I was hoping some experienced gardeners could share their suggestions or tips.

I just finished building two big beds using regular 2x6 wood. I treated the wood with raw linseed oil, and I added an extra layer of protection by using some leftover roofing membrane inside. Plus, I covered the tops with deck joist tape to keep moisture out. I had to order the raw linseed oil since all the local stores only had boiled, which is toxic. I've heard raw oils are popular for a reason!
We used the Japanese technique called shou sugi ban on our raised beds last spring, and so far, it’s been great! It won’t offer complete protection, but it definitely helps extend the wood's lifespan. We just torched the wood with a propane burner before putting the beds together, and the charred look is fantastic! You should give it a try!
