Tips for Buying Wood at a Fair Price

Asked By CraftyExplorer92 On

I'm looking to branch out from the standard dimensional lumber you find at big box stores, but I'm really intimidated by the whole process of buying lumber elsewhere. The board foot pricing seems confusing, and just when I think I've figured it out, new factors make it even tougher to compare different options. Does anyone have some advice or tips for finding good wood at reasonable prices?

Calculating board feet is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Just multiply the length, width, and thickness of the board (in inches) and then divide by 144. It might be easier to stick to one measurement system, though! I recommend building a connection with your local lumber yard or mill. They know the market and can keep you informed about price fluctuations. Plus, they can introduce you to their available wood species and their uses. It’s a great place to learn and meet fellow woodworkers too!

Thanks! That sounds like a plan. What would be a reasonable price for a 4x2x2" tabletop?
