Tips for Cleaning a Dryer Vent in the Attic

Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing well. I'm dealing with a bit of a dilemma with my dryer vent that goes into the attic. The setup is tricky because it doesn't stay horizontal, and it clogs up a lot, which I can tell from how long the dryer takes to run. I've tried cleaning it using a leaf blower and also a dryer vent cleaning kit that connects to a power drill, but I've faced some issues with both methods. On the leaf blower front, I feel like the ones I've used just didn't have the power needed. Are there specific leaf blower models or specs you all recommend? On the other hand, with the brush kit, my drill doesn't seem to spin the brush effectively unless I use very few extensions. I'm starting to think my drill might not be strong enough. Any advice on drill specs or recommendations for those tools would be super helpful! Thanks a bunch!

First off, is your ductwork smooth metal or the flexible kind? That really changes things! If it's the flexible aluminum type, it's definitely more challenging. Also, how long is your run? If it's around 12-14 feet and has multiple turns, that could be why it’s clogging easily. Measuring those turns can help narrow down solutions for you!

Thanks for your help! The duct is flexible aluminum. Would you recommend a specific tool or method for cleaning it?

If your leaf blower isn't perfectly snug in the vent, try wrapping a towel around it to seal it up. That way, all the air will push through the vent, which should help out a bit. But honestly, if it’s all flexible duct, you're in for a tougher cleaning job. Solid ducting is really the way to go for easier maintenance!
