I'm planning to edge joint some 8-foot Douglas fir 2x4s using a planer jig, where I'll be hot gluing shims as needed. Has anyone tried this method before? I'm curious if a single board standing on its edge will be stable enough while passing through the planer.

Using a #5 hand plane is a great idea for edge jointing these 2x4s! Just be sure you have a friend with a proper jointer if you can. It's a bit challenging but really rewarding if you can make it work!
If you're looking for a clean edge, you might want to run the 2x4s through a table saw first to square up the edges. It can make a big difference in the overall finish!
Yeah, but that only works well if you've already got a straight edge, which you won't have unless you use a jointing jig for the table saw. Plus, maneuvering an 8 ft board through the saw can be tricky!

That sounds good! But how do you keep the board steady while hand planing it, especially if you don't have a workbench or vice?
