Tips for Fixing Shaky Ceiling Fans

Hey folks! I've got three ceiling fans in my house—one outside, one in the living room, and one in the main bedroom. The outdoor fan has bent blades, which I know I need to replace. However, the bedroom fan, although relatively new, shakes a lot when I run it on medium or high speeds, while the living room fan is perfectly stable at all speeds. I'm worried about the bedroom fan's imbalance. What should I check to ensure it's been installed correctly or to fix the shaking issue? Could it be a loose bolt or something similar? I'm hoping to use it at a higher speed as it's getting warmer but I want to avoid any damage from the shaking.

If everything seems tight and in place, it might just be a matter of balance. Some fans come out of the box not perfectly balanced. You can buy a blade balancing kit from a hardware store. It's just a weight you attach to a blade to help even things out. Start by moving the weight around until you find the sweet spot where it doesn't shake, then stick it down.

I’ve actually used a clothes pin to temporarily hold a weight to a blade for balancing before—it works pretty well until you find the permanent fix!

One thing you might want to check is if the fan is installed evenly. Sometimes it can be due to a loose bolt holding it up, or maybe a misalignment during installation. Take a look and see if everything is snug.

Yeah, absolutely! Also, don't forget that fan blades can get loose over time. Make sure to check all the screws that secure the blades.
