Tips for Growing Sweet Potatoes as Houseplants

I'm wondering about growing sweet potatoes indoors. Each spring, I start sweet potato slips by placing last year's small potatoes in moist soil under sun lamps. My wife really enjoys how they look, and this year she's decided to use a few as houseplants. However, we're having trouble providing them with enough light. Any advice on how to keep them thriving indoors?

Sweet potatoes can really sprawl when grown outside, but if you're keeping them indoors, they often stay more compact. Just make sure to give them enough space to grow out and don’t overcrowd them with other plants!

I remember my dad telling me they did this too when he was younger! It's pretty traditional, and it's cool to see it making a comeback as a houseplant.

You might want to check out some ornamental sweet potato varieties; they can be quite nice for indoor spaces. But keep in mind they’ll probably still need some supplementary light—a good plant light could really help them thrive. Just out of curiosity, how did your first attempt with them go?

Unfortunately, she killed the first one. I ended up getting some $20 LED grow wands to help!
