Tips for Growing Yarrow and Amaranth in Hot Weather

I've only ever successfully grown microgreens, so I'm new to growing Yarrow and Amaranth. I live in Sacramento, CA, which gets pretty hot, especially by June, and my patio doesn't receive much direct sunlight. I bought these halfway grown plants on a whim, and they came with a long flowering bed that's not very deep. The store guy mentioned it's good for spinach, but I learned later that red and green amaranth is often referred to as 'spinach' but really isn't. I planted both together in the same bed, giving them about 12 oz of water and just left them overnight. Now, I'm wondering how to avoid killing my plants! What did I possibly do right or wrong, and what can I do moving forward to help them thrive?

Hey! First off, it's awesome that you're diving into gardening. Have you checked your soil quality? Yarrow thrives in well-balanced soil, and it usually does well with regular rainfall. Since you mentioned you bought special soil, you might be set, but watering regularly will help since both plants need some moisture. Just be cautious about over-watering, especially because Yarrow prefers not to be in soggy ground. Keep an eye on how they're adapting!

I think the soil I got is supposed to be good without needing additional fertilizer, but yeah, I read that Yarrow does best in well-drained soil that isn’t too wet. So does that mean I should water them regularly then?

Yeah, definitely! Just keep the soil lightly moist, not soggy. It's all about finding that balance.
