Tips for Hand Pouring a Backyard Sidewalk

Asked By ConcreteCrafter92 On

I'm planning to pour a sidewalk in my backyard by hand, using approximately one cubic yard of concrete. I intend to use pre-mixed bags and will rent a small mixer. My plan is to form and pour the sidewalk in alternating four-foot sections since it's too far and costly to rent a pump truck. Any thoughts or suggestions on this approach?

Sounds like a solid plan! Good luck with your project! Just make sure you have everything prepped before you mix the concrete so you can work quickly and efficiently.

Just a tip: it might be tough to get the sections perfectly level if you're doing it in parts. You seem to have the right idea, but if you can, try to do it all in one go. It’ll save a lot of headaches later on!

Just a heads-up, using 60-pound bags of ready-to-use concrete means you'll need around sixty bags to make a full cubic yard, which adds up to about 1.8 tons! I once did something similar with 80-pound bags, and trust me, it was a workout! If you’re planning to do it solo, consider getting some friends to help you out so you’re not stuck handling all that weight by yourself.

Yeah, I once poured a bunch of footings all by myself with 80-pound bags, and it was brutal. Definitely recommend getting help if you can!

In my area, there’s a rental shop that provides concrete in a trailer that can hold half a yard. It could be a convenient option for you if you're needing less than a full yard at a time.
