Tips for Hanging Pictures on Plaster Walls

I'm trying to hang some pictures on my plaster walls but I've had mixed results. I've tried using command strips, but they usually fall off after a while, taking some paint with them. I also attempted to use blue steel nails, but they end up bending instead of going in. I've heard that drilling a pilot hole is the way to go, and I've seen suggestions to put tape over the area before drilling. I understand that I should use screws instead of nails, and that I should drill straight in rather than at an angle. However, I'm unsure about the drill bit size. Should it be smaller than the screw? How much smaller exactly? Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated!

It's crucial to know what kind of wall you're dealing with. I have plaster and lathe, and I can easily tap a finish nail into it for lighter items. But if your nails are bending, there might be masonry behind the plaster. In that case, use a masonry bit along with plastic anchors and screws. If you're open to it, consider installing a picture rail! It avoids drilling holes and keeps everything intact without damage to your wall.

That's interesting! My walls are plaster and I think there's studs inside too. I know the picture rail idea sounds ambitious, but wouldn't mounting that also be tricky on plaster?
