Tips for Installing a Door in My Garage

I'm looking to add a prehung door to the side of my garage for easier access, but I'm facing a height issue. I have 78 inches of height on the outside and 88 inches on the inside from the floor to the beam. Should I consider cutting down the prehung door to fit? Or would it be better to install the door on the inside and just add some trim on the outside? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you go for the prehung door inside, just keep in mind that it may lead to a backwards sloping threshold, which could cause water to come in rather than run out. If you're okay with the door opening outward instead of the typical inward, it could work!

I faced a similar issue and found a 76-inch door at a second-hand home renovation store. It was in the mobile home section, but not entirely sure if that's what it was for since the frame was 4 inches deep. Definitely check out second-hand shops; you might score a deal! Just a heads up, my door didn’t have trim, so I had to build that myself, but adding the door was totally worth it!

Checking for manufactured or mobile home doors is a smart move! They often come in shorter sizes, usually under 80 inches. You might find something that works without all the hassle of cutting down a standard door.
